Flirt FM gets second studio

September 11th, 2003 | by Andrew Ó Baoill |

Flirt FM has a new studio in GMIT. I’m glad to see it, as GMIT students have faced difficulties in the past. How things have changed from the days when we were struggling to keep our first studio (though that struggle always continues). There is one caveat which I have raised in the past, which is that while having facilities on GMIT campus will facilitate production by GMIT students, it will not necessarily ensure that GMIT volunteers are integrated into the ‘Flirt FM family.’ Obviously, if the improved facilities result in enough volunteers, there will be a community based around the GMIT facilities. However, in the meantime - and if that does not happen - the result could be that GMIT volunteers become totally invisible to the greater volunteer body (primarily NUI, Galway volunteers), without becoming self-sustaining. It is important that interaction between the two groups be encouraged, to ensure that the station doesn’t end up being two groups which have no knowledge of each other.
