Anna Livia license renewed

August 30th, 2005 | by aobaoill |

The BCI has signed a new ten-year contract with Anna Livia FM, the independent public service station in Dublin, for the provision of a talk-based, broad format, special interest service in the franchise area of Dublin City.
I was involved in the station for a brief period when I lived in Dublin, and the station can largely be thought of as a community station in the community-service model (as opposed to the participation model). It’s largely a volunteer-run operation, though I understand they also had some people on a Community Employment scheme. Since I was working I only saw the station during the evenings, so didn’t get a very in depth understanding of the daytime operations.
The station has had some difficulties in recent years. Their studio, in the basement of a building/shed in the grounds of Griffith College, burnt down, which impedes operations somewhat. Getting volunteers for areas such as news programming was a difficulty, or rather getting on-going, structured involvement was difficult, as it is with any similar operation.
Glad to see their license, at least, is secure for a while, and I look forward to tuning in (they’re on 103.2FM) next time I’m back in Dublin.
