Overheard in Urbana

Sitting in Za’s on Green St, listening to some undergrads talk, my brain is beginning to hurt. A guy talking with some girls, has just been told about a girl whose major is feminist studies; Well, I never want to meet her then. They laugh, and agree that you guys wouldn’t get along.
He then starts to tell them of the time he had a ‘feminist lecturer’ for a Latino/a studies course.

She’s standing there talking about how female latinas have been oppressed by the white men. And I’m there like, Hello, white male here and I was going to just stand up and say Shut up! Just shut up!

Cue laughter from everyone at the table. Somehow I don’t think they were noting the irony of his preferred response.
