Buskers in Galway

The Band at Night (Galway)Originally uploaded by azulchinasky. One of the things I love about Galway – and have grown to appreciate even more since arriving in Urbana – is the prevalence of buskers and other street entertainers. So when I came across this picture in Flickr it seemed to capture a lot of the spirit of the town. A full band is somewhat unusual, but there are generally several musicians on the streets, no matter what time of day, and people dancing on the streets after coming from pubs or nightclubs is, if not a constant occurrence, not anything that would cause one surprise.I have been surprised, on the other hand, that there are no street musicians in Urbana, other than occasionally at the Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings, or when a school band is doing a fundraiser. The decline of the downtown areas (in favour of malls) is presumably a factor here.

I’m not sure about Urbana, but last summer I was at Champaign City Hall, and I offhandedly decided to ask about street performance regulations. I figured that maybe a license would be required, as it was in Chicago when I used to busk there. I was told that it is absolutely forbidden.
