Land of the free?

OK, so my earlier stories weren’t too threatening on the face of it – we were talking about people being approached by law enforcement personnel, but then going on their way. However, Angij’s piece from Monday is both poignant and worrying. Are families disappearing like this everywhere across the USA? Is it right to assume that people have ‘merely’ fled to Canada?

I live in the DC suburbs. Two anecdotes: The Pakistani family across the street from us just dissapeared one day. Well, they packed up a van and drove away, but you get the idea. The house is empty, yet it is not for sale.
My wife is a student teacher at a local high school. Immediately after the war started a significant number of Iraqi students stopped coming to school. The teachers were told that they were all children of Iraqi diplomats, all of whom have been deported. But many of the students, particularly other Muslims, are very upset and think that the Iraqi kids were expelled, or their families were rounded up.
Perfectly reasonable explanations for both I’m sure, but still, it’s upsetting.

It seems amazing that all these small stories are bubbling under the surface. Individually, they are perhaps too small to generate media stories (despite obviously being upsetting for a large number of observers, whatever about the ‘disappeared’ themselves), but in aggregate – whatever the reason for the disappearances – it it undoubtedly of note.
