Owning information

February 5th, 2006 | by aobaoill |

Each morning, six days a week, I get a mail from The Irish Times, with information about the stories appearing in that day’s paper. At the end of the email is a copyright notice, which reads in part:

Articles and information appearing in The Irish Times News Digest are owned by The Irish Times

I’m open to correction on this, but while Ireland differs from the US, for example, in recognizing IP rights in databases, information itself cannot be owned or copyrighted. That is, the representation of information, and the ability to create similar representations, can be restricted, but the flow of the actual information cannot. Am I wrong, or is the wording in this notice somehow misleading and/or problematic? (Corrections and elucidation from my more learned readers is welcome.)
