Discrimination against Travellers and Roma in European schools

May 7th, 2006 | by aobaoill |

The EU Observer notes an EUMC report on discrimination faced by Roma and Traveller children in the educational system, particularly in Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic:

The EUMC suggested that national governments should focus on introducing more Roma related materials to schools, such as history and language books, and get properly trained teachers to deal with ethnically mixed classes.

The EUMC report is quite detailed. I’d also point readers towards a recent paper (written by my mother, as it happens) that highlights the impact of the educational system on the lived experiences of Travellers in Ireland.
