Community TV comes to Ireland

May 7th, 2006 | by aobaoill |

Last Thursday the BCI signed a contract with the first community TV station in Ireland, DCTV.

DCTV will offer a range of means by which the community can learn about, manage and participate in television. Participation in the station and programming output will be guided by the founding objectives of DCTV; empowerment, participation and diversity.

Among those involved with the station are Seán Ó Siochrú and Margaret Gillan, both of whom have established reputations in the field. (I regularly assign for my students sections from the text on media governance by Ó Siochrú and Girard.) It’s taken a while to get community television established in Ireland, but let’s hope this is the first of many such channels.
