Media scholar Carey has died

May 23rd, 2006 | by aobaoill |

James Carey, former dean of the College of Communications at the University of Illinois, has died. He was perhaps best known for his enunciation of the ritual model of communication, which he posited against the transmission model.
I’ve only had one opportunity to see Carey speak, as he left the ICR and Urbana quite some time before I arrived. He was the keynote speaker at our first UICC conference in Chicago a number of years ago. Due to last minute difficulties with his schedule he appeared by teleconference rather than in person, but it was a memorable occasion, as rather than give a set-piece speech he instead engaged in discussion with the audience of grad students.
Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam dilis. May he rest in peace.
