Anti-Roma sentiment in the European Parliament

October 4th, 2006 | by aobaoill |

Another case of anti-Roma discrimination in Europe, this time involving a politician from soon-to-be-EU-member-state Bulgaria, making disparaging comments about a Roma MEP and Roma women in general, including the following choice quote:

“In my country there are tens of thousands of Gypsy girls who are much more beautiful than this honourable one,” Mr Stoyanov wrote in an email to colleagues. “You can even buy yourself a loving wife aged 12 or 13 … The best of them are very expensive – up to €5,000 each. Wow!”

Dimitar Stoyanov is “an official Bulgarian observer at the parliament” but has not yet been recalled by the Bulgarian government, though Bulgarian prime minister has said that “if we want to have the self-confidence of true Europeans, we have to take on European norms, rules, and respectful behaviour towards others.”
