India creates community radio policy

November 26th, 2006 | by aobaoill |

India has become the first [clarification: I left out the word “developing”] country to develop a policy on community radio:

The policy says that the license will be given only to a ‘non-profit’ organization with at least three years social service to local communities and the Community Radio Station should serve specific local community.

Community radio is not, of course, new to the developing world, or to India, but the development of a specific policy for the sector is innovative:

“The government feels that this decision will help in the further growth and strengthening of the community radio movement in India,” [Information and Broadcasting Minister] Dasmunshi said.
