UK signals end to radio

This has been just below the horizon for at least a decade, but seeing actual planning towards radio’s end is a sad moment for a radio geek like myself. It’s troublesome seeing these decisions being made by people who obviously have no understanding of, or love for, the medium:

The regulator also believes that there is little need to weep for the loss of a decidedly local medium because, based on current trends, more than 90 percent of listeners will enjoy digital radio in some form other than AM or FM radio in a decade.
It could be Digital Audio Broadcasting—the U.K.’s version of HD Radio—radio carried via TV, radio streamed via the Internet, or satellite radio, which is not yet available commercially in the U.K.

The author of this piece seems to be hinting at the obvious – the importance of the local nature of radio, which can’t be replaced by satellite broadcasting, and which DAB solutions tend to dilute.
