Bush to visit Ireland

April 5th, 2003 | by aobaoill |

More detail is emerging on Bush and Blair’s summit in Ireland. Bush will be arriving on Monday evening, and the talks will take place on Tuesday.
I’ve just received a message from Galway Alliance Against War (GAAW) about the actions they are taking in response to this event:

There will be protests on Monday evening at the arrival in Ireland of George W. Bush and at his cynical abuse of the Irish peace process.
For those in a position to travel to the Irish Anti-War Movement’s BELFAST protest, arrangements are as as follows: meet outside Kate’s Bar, Galway Shopping Centre, before noon on Monday. At present, it seems that there will be car-pooling arrangements, but if there is sufficient interest, a bus may be arranged. Either way, those travelling should not expect to be back in Galway before 1 am. If you intend to travel (or if you are willing to drive and bring others, please REPLY ASAP to this.
Between 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm (around the time of Bush’s arrival), there will also be a protest in Galway. Meet at the Shop-street, High-street, Mainguard-street junction. Bring candles, drums, and placards.
Time is short, and we all have to need to act quickly to ensure that Bush gets an appropriately warm Irish welcome. Tell your friends about the arrangements; encourage them to participate

From the RTE story I quoted above, it is interesting to note the stance of Sinn Féin on the summit – their members will attend the protests, but their leaders will also participate in the “Irish peace process” aspect of the summit. Cake: have it and eat it!
