Sinn Fein were outflanked on this one by the SDLP, who don’t exactly owe them any favours. The SDLP said they would join the protest, so SF had to do likewise. Not to follow suit would have been embarrassing to SF who were very vocal in publicly condemning the war, but as usual played down their attitude to US foreign policy when they had the opportunity to meet the charming Mr. Bush.
