International Criminal Court

July 2nd, 2003 | by aobaoill |

From today’s NYT:

The Bush administration suspended all American military assistance to 35 countries today because they refused to pledge to give American citizens immunity before the International Criminal Court.

Of course this is just an implementation of what had been promised earlier, so so much, so old. However, the article highlights an important point:

Richard Dicker, a director of Human Rights Watch in New York, which has lobbied for the court’s creation, said the suspension of military aid today amounted to a defeat for the current campaign against the court.

Another interesting note is that this decision (mandated by legislation) means that military assistance to Colombia is to be suspended – in practice only $5m of the $100m pledged this year – but it could lead to long term changes in the ‘War on Drugs.’
