Aceh

Recently I received, via ZNet, information about a US journalist in danger in Aceh. That situation has since been resolved, but the overall situation in the province remains troubling, as this InterWorldRadio report notes:

Hundreds of civilians have now died in the ongoing clampdown in the Indonesian province of Aceh, says a coalition of anti-torture groups. 40,000 people have been displaced by the conflict, adds the World Organisation against Torture. Government troops are accused of widespread human rights violations, although reports are patchy as journalists and aid organisations have been prevented from reaching Aceh. The organisation also warns food, water, and medicine is in short supply.
