Changes to funferal

Those accessing the site will have noticed a few changes recently. I’d wanted to make many of them for some time, but it was only recently that I felt confident enough in my use of Movable Type to make the leap.
Among the main developments:

• Latest item in the ‘Images’ category always at the top of the page.
• Latest media, blogging, and computing headlines at top of page.
• Essay listing in sidebar now links to MT entry of last 5 essays.
• Link to category archives at bottom of each entry
• Sidebar now on individual archive pages
• Sidebar cleaned up. Removed Calendar and Monthly archives, and reference to ‘Thoughts from the midwest’ mailing list. If you want to be added to the list, you can email me, but I’m not going to actively promote it (in the near future anyhow).
• Added email link to Author listing at bottom of posts.
• Changed default number of posts on front page to 8 (from ‘all in last 5 days’) and on XML feed to 10. Also changed XML feed to include full body of post (instead of first 20 words).

The new layout means I have to jump an extra hoop in posting stories. I obviously don’t want to have ‘Images’ posts showing up twice. Since MT doesn’t allow an ‘exclude’ filter on listing entries, after writing stories I need to add ‘text’ as a secondary heading, and only list entries with this category. I may come up with a nicer way to do this in the future – if you have a solution, please email me.
