The public, the FCC, congress, and you

The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press (bit of a mouthful that) has just released a report that, in large part deals with the public reaction to the recent FCC rule changes:

Opposition to a Federal Communications Commission decision to loosen media cross-ownership restrictions has increased sharply since February, as more Americans have learned about the plan. Overall, half say the FCC decision would have a negative impact on the country, up from 34% in February. Just 10% believe the effect of the rules change will be positive, largely unchanged from February.

188-1.gifIn addition, they note that knowledge of the plans has increased sharply – which is good news for groups opposing the rules, like Free Press/Mediareform.net, as the more people know about the changes the more they disprove of them.So what can people do to fight the changes? Brian Lambert of St Paul Pioneer Press has written an article about the various legislative efforts that are underway. Free Press are co-ordinating a grass-roots campaign to gain support for these bills, through phone-your-rep efforts amongst others. If you haven’t already done your bit, what are you waiting for?
