Coup in Sao Tome and Principe

July 16th, 2003 | by aobaoill |

Army officers have taken control of the tiny West African island state of Sao Tome and Principe. Rebels seized Prime Minister Maria das Neves and several cabinet ministers at dawn and are now in control of government buildings, as well as state television and radio. There are no reports of any casualties. Sao Tome and Principe is one of the world’s poorest states, but has large offshore oilfields.
