More detail on FCC-rule debate

An update at MediaReform.net gives some more detail on the Congressional debate taking place:

Currently in the House, the fight to repeal the FCC rules is playing out. The Republican leadership has moved the Commerce, Justice, State Appropriations bill (which funds the FCC) to the floor a full day ahead of schedule, catching everyone off guard. The Obey amendment, offered and adopted in committee which would block the national ownership cap, remains in the bill. The Hinchey-Price amendment has been offered on the floor this afternoon. It would block the other two major rule changes from June 2nd, cross ownership and local TV consolidation. The debate was heated. Many Democratic leaders came out against the Hinchey-Price amendment, charging that pursuing an ideal solution would result in the defeat of a compromise by bringing change too fast and inviting a backlash from the Republicans. Supporters made a strong case that the cross-ownership rule was by far the most significant issue with regard to repealing FCC rules. To ignore it for tactical reasons would be irresponsible to democratic values. A vote is expected later today.
