Contradictions in Irish government policy

“The Government has published new guidelines to encourage mothers to continue breastfeeding as the sole source of nutrition for six months, and to continue breastfeeding for two years.
“Yet, at the same time, the Government is bringing legislation through the Oireachtas – The Maternity Protection (Amendment Bill) – which only provides workplace protection for breastfeeding mothers until a child is four months old. In fact, since mothers are entitled to four months paid maternity leave, this right will have relatively little impact in practice.”
