Local TV for Galway?

August 7th, 2003 | by aobaoill |

The Galway Advertiser reports today on an expression of interest – fronted by my friend Shauna O’Brien – in starting a local television channel for Galway.
Unlike the US Ireland does not have a tradition of local or public access television. The BCI’s current licensing process should change that. The expression of interest stage is the first part of that process. Arising from that the BCI has now decided to solicit applications for a station in Galway.
Shauna’s plan includes “a half hour magazine programme based on anything of interest in Galway city and county. It could be work happening around the town, meetings, and indepth interviews with organisations such as Swan Rescue to make people more aware of what’s happening in the area.”
Shauna and Steve, another partner in the group, are experienced in the Galway community/alternative media scene, and I hope things go well for them. Their support, over the years, for younger volunteers at Flirt FM, and the off-air work they have done with the station, is testament to their commitment and ability.
