Google buys Pyra

February 16th, 2003 | by aobaoill |

Unsurprisingly, given the fact that blogging is such a major topic of discussion on blogs (and I am aware of my own guilt on this), the purchase by Google of Pyra/Blogger is what one commentator on MeFi called “the ultimate newsmeme”.

There are mixed views on how good a fit this is, but one presumes that Google didn’t jump into this without thinking. My take is that Google wants to position itself as the major player in organisation of news and cultural information. The blogosphere, so-called, is an example of real-time ranking of news sources, cultural developments and so on.

I have to think, though, that a blog aggregator, such as blogdex, might be a somewhat more immediate need, which could be tacked on to Google News, but direct access to the Blogger database may allow some interesting gains.

In addition, the commentator who referenced Google’s move into Intranet services may be onto something. Blogger may no be so much as more of the same for Google, as a complementary service which can be integrated into corporate services.
