Magill shuts (again)

October 7th, 2003 | by aobaoill |

“Magill shuts down in Hogan trading collapse” was the headline on p7 of the Irish Independent, and RTE news had an audio item examining why this might have occurred. Both Magill and In Dublin have shut down. The result, of course, is that the only (mass circulation) magazine with anything resembling political content/analysis is the satirical magazine Phoenix – which has, regrettably, often been more stimulating and informative than Magill for the past while. (Phoenix is loosely based on Private Eye in the UK for those who know that title). Magill has come and gone on numerous occasions since it was first launched in the early 1980s by Vincent Brown. While it had managed to attract attention with its exposes of political corruption in the 1980s, in recent times it has become less radical, and I have discerned a move to the right.
