Arnold’s publicity machine

“This goes to show how important one appearance on the Today show can be” according to Jay Leno. The remark was in jest but leads to questions about whether Leno and the show can claim not to have breached FCC rules regarding fairness and balance. The FCC, of course, bent the rules substantially, reclassifying the Howard Stern show as a news programme in order to allow it to interview Arnold without requiring balance during the campaign. The Howard Stern show, seemingly, claimed that the decision to interview Arnold had nothing to do with his candidacy – it was purely coincidental (from their end, if not Arnold’s).
Of course, maybe the rules weren’t breached. Maybe they’re just very badly broken…..
