Update on Zimbabwe’s newspapers

October 8th, 2003 | by aobaoill |

According to today’s Interworld Radio:

Zimbabwe’s government is determined to close two more of the country’s independent newspapers. Information minister Jonathan Moyo said The Standard and The Zimbabwe Independent were dogs of imperialism because they called President Robert Mugabe a thief. He has launched a new organisation designed to produce stories approved by the government. Last week the authorities closed The Daily News and its sister Sunday paper.

However allAfrica.com (originally in the Zimbabwe Standard and via OJR) has also reported that The Daily News has announced plans to relaunch – in an online only format – from a new South Africa-based domain and site.
