Focus on local news

Poynter has reported a study by Northwestern University graduate students, which claims that “in most categories of local information, most newspaper websites just aren’t very useful — even though newspapers often do publish such content in print.”
In a separate development Gannett recently announced an initiative, titled “Real Life, Real News: Connecting with Readers’ Lives,” which aims to change how local news is reported to focus on “the impact local news has on readers.” The idea is that young readers aren’t interested in local news as it is currently framed, so a more immediate, concrete hook needs to be identified.
