Irish president talks about Irish presidency of EU

November 20th, 2003 | by aobaoill |

The EU Observer is reporting that the Irish President, Mary McAleese, has given a speech to the European Parliament outlining the priorities of the upcoming Irish presidency of the EU – Ireland will hold the presidency from January to June 2004. Among other things, the Irish government is backing the inclusion of a reference to god/christianity in the European constitution currently being drafted. Not surprising, given the high proportion of christians in Ireland, though I personally oppose the proposal. The possible future accession of Turkey is one oft quoted factor, but the large numbers of non-christians already living within the borders of the EU is also important to consider.
