Rowland on Kay

January 26th, 2004 | by aobaoill |

Good to see my friend and fellow GEO steward, Dave Rowland, has started a blog. He’s pointed, in commenting on my story about David Kay, to his theory that Kay is part of a grand scheme by the US administration to manage the fallout of the WMD story.
There does seem to be something to this. Certainly Kay’s NPR interview, and later coverage, points to a more ‘nuanced’ view than initial reports suggested. He is not so much criticising administration statements and actions – this would, of course, open him up to personal criticism – as opening a line of argument: “Amazingly, it seems the WMD didn’t exist, despite all the evidence in advance. I wonder how we were mislead?” It’s similar to the stories I’ve seen arguing that the reason Saddam denied having weapons in the ‘wrong’ way – hence heightening suspicions – was because his scientists hadn’t informed him that he actually had no weapons. Crazy stuff….
