Gun ban confusion

March 3rd, 2004 | by aobaoill |

This is strange. There was widespread media coverage of John Kerry’s decision to attend the Senate to vote for an extension of the ban on assault weapons. However, it now turns out that the vote was actually on an amendment to a bill, and was designed to torpedo that bill. The bill was designed to insulate gun makers from liability for deaths. The Democrats added on the amendment to continue the ban on assault weapons that is due to expire later this year. They then voted with the Republicans to vote down the amended bill.
I understand the strategy, but the news stories were misleading to say the least – and I’ve only found out because of the BBC, not a US outlet.
