Racism in Galway

March 6th, 2004 | by aobaoill |

A Galway paper (the Connacht Sentinel, part of the Connacht Tribune group) published an classified ad this week that read “4 Bedroom House, no coloured, Fully furnished.”
Now, why can’t I believe this was, as claimed, a misprint? It is, unfortunately, only a single example of a racist trend in house-letting in Galway. Both the accommodation agency and the newspaper must take responsibility for this, and not only ensure that it is not repeated, but demonstrate their commitment to stopping the trend. An ongoing investigation by the newspaper, naming and shaming, and refusing to advertise properties from agencies found to be engaging in racist practices, would be appropriate.
