Strange Brew roadtrip

Gugai at workI’ve just returned from one of the more enjoyable nights out I’ve had in some time. GugaĆ, the DJ who runs the Drum bar on Mondays and the Warwick nightclub on Thursdays (I’m back in Galway at the moment) had a ‘road trip’ (under his ‘Strange Brew’ moniker) to a bar a short distance outside town. He lined up 5 bands, and a small crowd – about 50 in total – paid the EUR13 to get a bus out and go to the gig.The novelty of the exercise was an obvious factor in the night’s success – gathering at 6pm to get a bus to a gig isn’t the usual start to a night. The journey may have been short – I figure we were less than 10 miles outside town – but the change from an urban to rural setting was complete, and fun. The bar we went to was set off from the main road, surrounded by fields, and was definitely a ‘country’ bar. The gig actually took place in a back room that was pretty much the perfect size for the crowd – a small stage, enough seating, and our own bar. With five bands/singers the night was full without having to rush or change over at too hectic a pace. The highlights were the ‘NPB’ – formerly National Prayer Breakfast – who are probably the most experienced, and definitely the most accomplished, though Beretta and Life After Modelling were also well worth seeing. Word is there could be another road trip in a few months, and I’m crossing my fingers that it will be after my return in June….
