Submission to the Commission

March 28th, 2004 | by aobaoill |

I made a short submission (PDF) to the Commission on electronic voting on behalf of At What Cost?, which I sent in last Friday. Due to the short timescale involved, and my workload with some other projects, it was not feasible to run as open a drafting process as I would have liked, but I think the points made in the document reflect fairly those made by us in the campaign so far.I concentrated on non-technical points, as technical aspects have been addressed in detail by groups such as ICTE. Given the concentration on accuracy and secrecy in the terms of reference of the commission it was not possible to raise some points – such as the overall effect of electronic voting on democracy and legitimacy – in any detail. However, in discussing blank and other spoilt votes, and the difference between secrecy and privacy, I hope we have managed to bring some points to the fore in the debate.
