Passport control and Iraq

April 14th, 2004 | by aobaoill |

This from Michael Moore’s latest missive:

The funniest story my guys tell me is how when they fly into Baghdad, they don’t have to show a passport or go through immigration. Why not? Because they have not traveled from a foreign country — they’re coming from America TO America, a place that is ours, a new American territory called Iraq.

This reminds me of a story from late last year regarding passport control and travel to-from Guantanamo (I think). The lack of passport control was used to argue that events there were subject to U.S. domestic law. Seemingly there is now a passport control desk. Not sure what the impact of Moore’s revelation will be – Iraq is currently a protectorate of the U.S.A., so this may not be too much of a surprise. What will be interesting will be what happens after ‘independence’ at the end of June. Also, I wonder if those coming from other countries need to complete passport control at present….
