Swanlund update

April 16th, 2004 | by aobaoill |

I gave a rather terse update as the press conference was going on earlier, and have rewritten it slightly now. There were three gains mentioned, two involving Cantor/university administration, one involving Trustee Carroll:
– Administrators have facilitated the settting up of meetings with representatives of the Latino and Black caucuses in the state legislature
– Eight to ten coalition representatives will have a meeting with the North Central Association when they visit campus later this year. (This is the accreditation body for the university).
– Trustee Carroll is to put a motion regarding retiring the ‘Chief’ on the June BoT agenda
At the end of the press conference – which basically involved a short statement by Cantor and Brooke Anderson, followed by speeches by various people involved in the protest/anti-Chief coalition – a call was made to the phone of Chairman Eppley of the BoT (1-312-372-1121) and a loud and clear message was left by those present. Supporters were encouraged to call Eppley themselves and stress the need for retirement (of the ‘Chief’ though maybe Eppley should go too….).
