Committing to the war on terror

Those following the story of the ‘fake’ terrorists in Macedonia, will have seen the story get more complicated. The background is that in 2002 Macedonican police killed 7 people, claiming that they were terrorists who had ambushed the police.
It turns out that the seven were actually illegal immigrants who had been lured to Macedonia with promises of access to Western Europe. The fake ambush was staged in order to demonstrate Macedonia’s commitment to the War on Terror, and its support for the USA. Given the news reports this week, this may indeed have been an appropriate approach to demonstrate commitment.
Now the Macedonian Interior Minister, Ljube Boskovski, has fled to Croatia – he holds dual Croatian citizenship – just as an arrest warrant was being issued for him, and the Croatian government appears powerless to arrest or extradite him.
