Citizenships of convenience

May 10th, 2004 | by aobaoill |

To add weight to the argument that the citizenship referendum in Ireland is racist, it turns out that the Irish government does not track the number of passports issued at embassies overseas. I’ve said for some time that the ‘grandparent’ rule – whereby those who have a grandparent born in Ireland can claim Irish citizenship – is likely to result in far more cases of ‘citizenship of convenience’ than people physically travelling to Ireland to have a child born on the island. I know that some people here in the USA are claiming Irish citizenship now, so that their children or descendents can have the option of living in the EU in the future. The government is fighting the lesser problem (if problem it is), and one can only draw the obvious conclusions….
