Security Council II

March 7th, 2003 | by aobaoill |

It turns out that the BBC has a useful cheat sheet to the speeches which allows you to guage the positions of different countries. Currently it looks like its 5 against war (Germany, Syria, Russia, France, China), with the US in favour and Mexico still hard to read.
Spain is also (as expected) coming out in favour of war. The UK is just starting their slot – with Jack Straw doing the talking. What with Colin Powell talking for the US, and Straw for the UK, they’re obviously putting on the pressure. Straw is now saying that no speaker to the council has said that Iraq is fully and absolutely in compliance. Therefore Iraq has missed the final opportunity of 1441. Straw is also claiming to have read every detail of Blix’s recent x page document (show-off!). yadda yadda, lets go blow things up, which will make things better.
Also claiming that Iraq’s plans to enact legislation banning development of WMD is in response to an order in 1991, so therefore doesn’t count. Lets go kill people!
Actually, should be fair (!): he hasn’t explicitly said lets do the killing yet, but its coming….
