Emergency copyrght legislation needed to allow exhibition of manuscript

June 6th, 2004 | by aobaoill |

In a development on my previous report that the Joyce estate had threatened to sue the Irish government if there were any public readings of James Joyce’s work (or similar infringements) during Bloomsday celebrations, the Irish government has had to pass emergency legislation to allow the exhibition of manuscripts purchased by the National Library of Ireland. Interestingly, the problem was created by an Act introduced by the government in 2000, which had cast doubt on whether it would be possible to display a manuscript without infringing copyright.
