Ratliff on weblogs and the public sphere

Clancy has posted an interesting piece about weblogs and the public sphere on Culture Cat. It summarises some of the main questions surrounding the issue, and also gives some interesting food for thought in relation to how we should consider the ‘sub-nets’ – as counterpublics, or enclaves – that is, as I understand it, whether they are a means to sub-groups to consolidate and prepare themselves for interaction within the general public sphere, or are instead spaces in which there is a “charge to conform to rigid group norms.” An important issue, and one which can be usefully addressed to all forms of participatory media.
