Funferal

Wow, what a week.

It’s been a busy week here in Galway, despite my ostensibly empty calendar. On Friday there were elections for local government and the European parliament, and a constitutional referendum thrown in for good measure. This meant that my evenings last week were largely spent canvassing, and I spent most of this weekend at the election count centre – tallying on Saturday, and generally observing (and celebrating) on Sunday.
Now this week, my sister Heather is in Lucerne, hoping to qualify for the Olympics. She has already done well in the heat (2nd) and repechage (1st), and needs to come in the top two tomorrow in order to gain a slot (in the lightweight women’s double sculls). The signs are good, but it’s a tough race, and a tense time in our house.
On Wednesday I head to Dublin for Bloomsday, and will stay there for the conference on eGovernment at which I will be presenting my paper on electronic voting. Then back to Galway on Friday. And in the middle of all that, my other sister, Méadhbh, will be getting her exam results, from the ‘Part III’ in Mathematics at Cambridge, on Thursday.
All in all a potentially very happy week, but stressful, and strangely busier than expected….
