WRFU

One of the groups I’m most active in at the moment is that involved in setting up a new community radio station in Urbana, WRFU. It’s a joint project of the local Socialist Forum (the license holders) and the Indymedia Centre (the fiscal sponsors). We’re still at an early stage in planning – with our physical location depending on progress with the IMC’s capital campaign. However, we have made progress on organisational structure as outlined by Paul here. I’m now co-ordinating an effort to identify audio content that we can use to fill the gaps between locally produced programmes.
Even at this early stage, it looks like there’s a lot out there – I’ve received pointers to over 100 different sources – but not all of it will suit our needs, given our low budget. In essence we’re trying to find those free (or almost free) items available on CD or over the internet (or possibly by satellite, though this is more tricky). We’re particularly interested in items that serve a ‘public service’ (such as news, documentaries, etc.) and/or serve under-served elements of our community – such as content in languages such as Spanish or serving the Vietnamese community.
