Callanan on victims of terror

October 14th, 2004 | by aobaoill |

How thoughtful of Cllr. Danny Callanan of Sinn Féin. He was worried that a proposed minute of silence, at Galway City Council, for Ken Bigley would ignore all the other victims of violence. So he proposed that the silence should also honour those abducted and murdered by the IRA over a 30 year period. Oh, wait, that was me drifting into fantasy-land. What he did say was that “all victims of violence in Iraq as well as Israelis and Palestinians who have died in the Middle East conflict should be included.”
The cognitive dissonance that must be generated daily in the lives of such people, who still see ‘going back to war’ as an option for the IRA, and who are in partnership with that ‘standing army’, must be astounding. I fully understand those relatives of the ‘disappeared’ – people abducted and killed by the IRA – who responded to Gerry Adam’s statements on Bigley by calling on him to put more effort into having the missing bodies returned.
