Problems with QuickTime

For some reason, ever since my disk failed, I’ve been having difficulty playing .avi files under QuickTime. I’ve come across explanations online, about problems with how QuickTime implements the standards, and work-arounds such as the VLC player. However, I’d prefer to just be able to play the things in QuickTime – I prefer to use as few different players as possible – and can’t understand why pieces that played in the past don’t play now!
