Abortion rights in danger in the USA

November 3rd, 2004 | by aobaoill |

The Center for Reproductive Rights has said that up to thirty states would criminalise abortion if Roe vs. Wade was overturned after Bush changes the balance. Included in the total are 21 ‘high-risk’ states, and 9 ‘middle-risk’ states, including Illinois where I’m based.
Perhaps I’m overly pessimistic, but I wonder whether the Supreme Court would stop at over-turning RvW – is there any possibility of their finding a consistutional basis for an outright ban on abortion throughout the U.S.A.?
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t admit/point to the situation in Ireland, where thousands of women have to travel to the UK every year – a perfect case of ‘an Irish solution to an Irish problem’, as while abortion is allowed in cases where there is a ‘threat to the life or health of the mother’ very few (if any) are carried out in the country. Those who wonder at the barbarity of the Irish situation should know that the right to travel abroad for an abortion is only there due to a constitutional referendum in 1995 – though women had, of course, been making the journey for years.
