Labour campaigns on ODA commitment

December 8th, 2004 | by aobaoill |

The Irish Labour Party is launching a campaign “to pressure the Government into honouring its commitment to increase spending on Overseas Development Aid to 0.7% of GNP by 2007.” 0.7% is the target advocated by the UN, and the Irish government announced its intention to hit the target by 2007 at the UN’s Millennium Summit – at the same time that the government was lobbying developing countries for support in their bid for a (subsequently wasted) seat on the Security Council.
So a worthy issue on which to campaign then. And you too can take part – one aspect will involve postcards that can be completed and returned to the government, demanding action.
