Teacher apologises for critical comments of students

This is amazing. A group of 11-12 year olds were made write letters to a US soldier as a social studies assignment. So they did. And they asked questions, like “Have you seen how many civilians you or some other soldier killed?” and “By the way, when you shoot someone, is it great or horrible?”
The soldier who happened to receive the package was actually based in the DMZ in Korea, though many of the comments seem to have centred around Iraq. That soldier, 20 year old Rob Jacobs, commented that “If they don’t have anything nice to say, they might as well not say anything at all.” So much for defending freedom.
Anyhow, the pupils’ teacher has taken it upon himself to apologise for the students’ comments – though the letters seem to have been far more critical and incisive than one might have expected. I would have thought the students should be complimented for engaging critically with the task and asking probing, important, questions.
