Global perspectives on community radio/media

February 25th, 2005 | by aobaoill |

Community Radio has, of course, been extending in reach over the last decade or more (as noted in, for instance, UNESCO’s World Communications Report) but this article gives an interesting overview of the differences in growth and emphasis in different areas globally. Of particular note is that some parts of Latin America are lacking in (legalised frameworks for) community radio. The article talks about what this means for the ability for African and Latin American countries to have a common approach to this issue at WSIS. It looks like ‘community radio’ won’t be pushed so much as a concentration on ‘local media.’ The danger, of course, is that community media activists may end up applying pressure that will eventually be for the benefit of commercialised operations – is a private, commercial, media that much better than a (well-formed, responsive) state-owned media system?
