Lessig stops publishing – in journals with restrictive copyright terms

March 16th, 2005 | by aobaoill |

Lawrence Lessig has decided not to publish in journals that force him to sign over his copyright or that do not allow him to license his article under at least a Creative Commons attribution-noncommercial license. [This is a relatively restricted license that would not allow commercial use – thereby preventing competition with the journal – and would not allow derivative works.]
It is of course easier for Lessig as a tenured and established leading intellectual to do this than it would be for someone like myself. Hopefully, though, his move – and possibly those of people like him – will have knock-on benefits for those of us lower down the chain.
