Analysing Indymedia

April 15th, 2005 | by aobaoill |

There’s been some interesting discussion in the last day or two among some Indymedia activists about the state of independent media, and specifically the nature and development of Indymedia itself. Kicked off by Rabble’s pondering of the difference between GNN, Indymedia and ‘OurMedia’, and his questioning as to why Indymedia hasn’t innovated to the extent these other groups have, the always incisive MediaGeek took up the baton and argued that the greater number of those involved – coupled with a consensus model – made such innovation difficult, but that there is a space for both approaches. Today Chuck weighs in claiming that Indymedia has stagnated and giving a rather detailed analysis – including an interesting call (similar to that in a presentation I saw last year) that Indymedia should more clearly state its political affiliation. Dru at Misnomer has also given his take on things with a more positive evaluation, though still seeing room for improvement. Well worth reading all of these if you’re interested in radical media or Indymedia in particular.
